SLOVENSKO DOBRODELNO DRUŠTVO

Charitable association

Slovensko Dobrodelno Društvo (SDD) is a charitable association founded on the 14th of April 1948 in Trieste. It is a non-profit association focusing on social equality. It is not affiliated to any political party, religion or race. The association main focus is to help children and young adults, members of the Slovene community living in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, in the cultural and educational areas.

SDD was founded in the aftermath of the 2nd World War by a number of members of the Slovene community living in the Free Territory of Trieste wishing to help the less fortunate members of the community. Among the founders were lawyers, educators and entrepreneurs. Their goal was to help the unemployed, poor, the disabled and orphans as well as students enrolled in the Slovene schools.

Today the association’s main areas of interest are:

  • to help children attending the Slovene schools in Italy (with the help of the schools’ headmasters we pay for school trips, theatre tickets and magazine subscriptions for the more needy children);

  • to support university students (through the two memorial grants “Mihael Flajban” and “Irena Srebotnjak”).
